Leap's 44th Sandcastle Classic runs 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday 24 October 2026 at Ocean Beach at Balboa Street, with more than 5,000 people on the sand.

Sandcastle Classic puts 5,000 on Ocean Beach

Leap's 44th Annual Sandcastle Classic runs Saturday, October 24, 2026 at Ocean Beach at Balboa Street in San Francisco. Building starts at 11:00 a.m. and the event ends at 3:30 p.m.

The organiser calls it Northern California's largest sandcastle competition. Its own figures put more than 5,000 people on the beach each year, and the organiser states the event is free to the public to attend.

The public drops in without registering. The organiser's participation page invites beach-day visitors to help build the Community Castle at Ocean Beach at Balboa St.

The published day, hour by hour

Teams arrive and check in between 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. and walk to assigned beach sites. Team sites open for preparation at 10:00 a.m. Students arrive between 10:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.

Building begins at 11:00 a.m. Castle introductions by student representatives run at 11:30 a.m. and again at 1:30 p.m. A DJ set runs at 12:00 p.m. and a dance performance at 12:30 p.m.

Building ends at 2:30 p.m. A performance follows at 3:00 p.m., then the award ceremony at 3:15 p.m. The event closes at 3:30 p.m.

The stage slots the organiser names

Four published slots break up the building. DJ Wonway Posibul plays the 12:00 p.m. set, and the organiser describes him as a GRAMMY-nominated songwriter and emcee. Cuicacalli Ballet Folklórico performs at 12:30 p.m.

Lion Dance Me performs at 3:00 p.m., and the organiser places the troupe in San Francisco's Chinatown. KOIT's Freska hosts the 3:15 p.m. award ceremony.

Student representatives from each team introduce their castles twice, at 11:30 a.m. and again at 1:30 p.m. The event hashtag is #LeapArts #SandcastleClassic.

What the clocks mean at the desk

The event sits inside one daylight window. Teams move first, from 8:00 a.m. Students follow in the half hour after 10:00 a.m. The published event closes at 3:30 p.m.

Front office and revenue teams should plan the day around two clocks. The 8:00 a.m. arrival run and the 3:30 p.m. close are separate staffing calls.

The published event pages carry no shuttle plan and no parking plan for the site. Ocean Beach sits at the western end of Balboa Street, and no transport arrangement appears on the home page, the event pages or the FAQ.

Where the money goes

The Classic raises 30 per cent of the cost of delivering Leap's arts education programs. The organiser's 2026 goal is $300,000.

Leap is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit established in 1979. It places professional teaching artists in classrooms for grades K through 5. The organiser publishes its reach as more than 8,000 students in more than 30 Bay Area elementary schools each year, and the event FAQ gives 8,500 students across 30 schools.

Who builds and who registers

Teams of three to five companies partner with a local elementary school. Each team pays a $500 registration fee and sets a fundraising goal of at least $5,000. Team registration closed on August 15, 2026.

Individual Participant registration stays open through October 15, 2026. The public needs no registration to attend on the day.

The FAQ states that further events run over the summer and weekly through October, ahead of the main day at the beach. Volunteers take set-up, management, teardown and photography roles.

The 2026 theme is "Bay Area Vibes". The organiser's own history line dates the first Leap Sandcastle Classic to 1983.

A new organisation leads the event

Youth Art Exchange and Leap Arts are combining into one organisation. Youth Art Exchange takes leadership of Leap Arts, and Raffaella Falchi Macias, executive director of Youth Art Exchange, will lead the combined body.

Youth Art Exchange runs a youth architecture program and joins the Sandcastle event. The organiser states that sponsors, teams and partners continue working with a dedicated team.
