What Climate Week NYC 2026 Measures
Climate Week NYC 2026 runs September 20 to 27 across New York City. Climate Group hosts the week, and the UN General Assembly meets over the same days. The official program lists more than 1,000 events and more than 100,000 attendees. Two of its twelve themes land on hotel operations: Buildings and Infrastructure, and Energy and Electrification. A third, Food and Agriculture, covers the kitchens.
The week concentrates attention on building performance during seven days when the city is full. Corporate accounts, ownership groups and lenders read the same coverage. An operator with current numbers answers on the spot.
Three City Laws Already Require the Numbers
Three New York laws require the underlying data, and the Department of Buildings publishes how each one works.
Local Law 84 of 2009, amended by Local Law 133 of 2016. The benchmarking law requires covered buildings to measure energy and water consumption each year and submit the data to the city by May 1. The city standardizes the filing through the EPA's ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager.
Local Law 33 of 2018. A benchmarking building receives an annual energy efficiency score and a letter grade, disclosed each year.
Local Law 97 of 2019. LL97 sets annual greenhouse gas emissions limits on covered buildings. The Department of Buildings converted those limits to ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager property types, and the revised limits cover 2024 through 2029. From 2026 every owner must report emissions using the Portfolio Manager property types. Limits for years after 2029 come from 1 RCNY §103-14.
The three filings form the document set a corporate account asks for: a benchmark submission, a grade and an emissions report.
Metering First: Split the Building Into Systems
Sub-metering turns one whole-building number into a work list. The systems worth isolating are the central plant, the kitchens, the laundry, the guestroom floors and the large meeting floors. Two city laws point at the mechanism: Local Law 87 covers energy audits and retro-commissioning, and Local Law 88 covers lighting upgrades and sub-metering.
A monthly read per system converts the annual filing into a schedule of work.
Housekeeping and Laundry Load
Housekeeping drives the load curve through two levers: the number of room touches per stay and the temperature setpoint on the floors being cleaned. Track both for one week during a full city week, then track the same week in a soft month. The difference is an operational number that survives an audit.
Laundry moves with occupancy. Weigh the linen that goes into the wash and the linen that comes out. Route flatwork to a plant that publishes its own energy data. A weighed laundry line gives the operator a number to report.
Food Waste, Weighed
Food and Agriculture is one of the twelve themes in the 2026 program. Kitchens produce a large, measurable waste stream for a hotel. Put a scale at the dish return and a clipboard beside it. Record weight by service, by outlet and by day. Haulers bill by weight or by pull, so the log ties directly to the invoice.
The Citations a Corporate Account Asks For
These are the documents and frameworks an operator can name when a corporate account, a conference host or an RFP asks for the hotel's carbon position. Each has a published owner.
The LL84 benchmark submission and the LL97 emissions filing, both built in ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager; the LL33 energy efficiency grade; LEED certification from the U.S. Green Building Council; and the GSTC Industry Standard for Hotels, published by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council.

The Department of Buildings' LL97 page also lists NYC Accelerator among its support links. The program is free to a building owner and gives an operator a second read on the emissions number before the filing.
What to Do This Week
Confirm the May 1 benchmark filing is complete in ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager. Confirm the 2026 emissions report uses the Portfolio Manager property types. Pull one monthly read per metered system, one week of housekeeping touches and one week of weighed food waste. Then write the six-paragraph carbon answer the account will ask for.
