Six canal palaces on the Herengracht
Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam occupies six monumental canal houses on the Herengracht, the Gentleman's Canal. The houses run across the 17th and 18th centuries, and the row sits inside the UNESCO-listed canal ring.
Amy Tung stayed two nights in July 2026 and published her review on 15 September 2026. The review records a King Grand Premier with Canal View, Hilton Honors Diamond status and a rating of 5.0.
The building the hotel occupies
The hotel opened under the Waldorf Astoria flag in 2014. The review dates the most recent renovation to 2024 with the work completed in January 2025. InsideFlyer repeats the completion and credits Prince of Travel with reporting it first.
Homeowners along the canal were taxed on the width of a building, and the narrow frontages and their hoisting beams follow from that. Forbes Travel Guide attributes the carved wooden staircase in the main building to Daniel Marot, who assisted Jean Berain, the designer to Louis XIV.
What a free night certificate buys here
Two Hilton Honors Free Night Certificates covered the stay, each earned on a US-issued Hilton co-branded American Express card. A night at the property otherwise prices at 150,000 Hilton Honors points.
Peak seasons carry a minimum-stay requirement on reward redemptions, and this stay met a two-night floor. A one-night award search that returns nothing can be worth re-running as a two-night search, and the reservations team combined certificates from two separate accounts to cover the requirement.
The two-guest limit on standard rooms
The review reports a two-guest cap on standard rooms under preservation and fire-safety rules, and counts young children inside that limit. A crib comes free from the King Grand Premier category upward.
An older child who needs a bed fits in the King One Bedroom Suite and in several higher suite categories, which take three guests. Connecting rooms cover larger parties.
Inside the King Grand Premier with Canal View
The booking was a Queen Deluxe, the standard reward room, and Diamond status carried an upgrade to a King Grand Premier with Canal View. A pre-arrival email two days before check-in confirmed the change.
The room centres on a king bed with a loveseat at its foot. Both face a smart TV and a fireplace. The layout adds a walk-in closet with a dressing mirror, two luggage racks, a Nespresso machine and a stocked minibar. The bathroom holds a soaking tub with a headrest and a screen, a walk-in rain shower, a Dyson hair dryer and Aesop toiletries. The windows are double-glazed and coated one way.
Diamond benefits at check-in were breakfast at Goldfinch Brasserie, which the review values at 55 euros a person, a welcome box of Klompjes chocolates, and a late checkout that went unused.
Breakfast at Goldfinch Brasserie
Breakfast runs on the Garden Level inside Goldfinch Brasserie and came included with Diamond status. Service is a la carte, and the review records no ceiling on the order for a Diamond member.
An opening Taste of Waldorf spread fills the table with variety, and the kitchen asks after allergies before the order. The hotel's two-Michelin-star restaurant, Spectrum, closed permanently in May 2026, and the hotel added Goldfinch Brasserie for dinner from June 2026.
The Vault Bar and the room that hosts it
The lower floors once held a bank. The Vault Bar sits inside the building's original bank vault, runs a speakeasy and espionage theme, hands out its menu as a secret dossier, and stores spirits in the old safe-deposit boxes.
The Maurer Room is a private dining room in Rococo style with 18th-century artwork and murals. The Peacock Lounge carries the brand's Peacock Alley concept with smaller plates through the day and an afternoon tea from Wednesday to Sunday. The review did not dine there.
The spa and the garden
The Guerlain Spa holds an indoor pool, a eucalyptus steam room, a sauna and a relaxation lounge with tea, snacks and magazines. The review puts the pool's around-the-clock schedule among the property's strongest features for a late arrival.
A fitness centre runs bright and well equipped, with vitality water and fresh fruit. The Van Loon Suite connects directly to the spa and the pool.
Behind the hotel sits a private courtyard and garden inside the UNESCO canal-ring protection, with a tea house and no events or food service. Forbes Travel Guide calls it the largest private garden in Amsterdam.
The rates and the booking routes the review records
Off-season rates start around 850 euros a night before taxes and fees, which the review converts to about 1,370 Canadian dollars. Points bookings start at 150,000 Hilton Honors points a night for a Standard Room Reward. One Mile at a Time measured a base room at 400 to 800 euros in 2021.
The hotel participates in Hilton for Luxury. The booking route lists daily breakfast for two, a $100 hotel credit, a one-category upgrade at check-in, double Hilton Honors points and third-, fourth- or fifth-night-free promotions. Four US Hilton co-branded American Express cards earn 7X to 14X on Hilton stays.
What the review carries alone
The property details, the Diamond benefits and the two rate observations come from the review. No second source carries the breakfast price of 55 euros a person, the two-guest cap on standard rooms, the eight tulip varieties in the garden, the Wednesday-to-Sunday afternoon tea or the Schiphol transfer times.
