The building and the date
Purdue University trustees approved the Academic Success Building on Friday 7 June 2024, and the university announced the approval on 10 June. The building carries about 248,000 square feet across 15 floors near the intersection of West Street and Michigan Street. It holds classrooms, laboratories, a dining area for almost 400 people and nearly 500 residential beds. It is the first new building of Purdue University in Indianapolis.
Trustees set the project cost at $187 million. It is financed by non-fee replaced debt: $105 million of auxiliary housing and dining, $60 million of capital cash appropriation and $22 million of gift funds.
Purdue released conceptual renderings on 15 January 2025 and broke ground on 2 April 2025 in a ceremony at the Indiana Historical Society, across the street from the site. Completion is scheduled for May 2027. The June 2024 approval anticipated construction from February 2025, and the January 2025 release said April 2025. Ground was broken in April.
The site in the master plan
Trustees endorsed a conceptual campus master plan on 6 June 2025. The plan envisions 16 new buildings on 28 acres, 4.5 million gross square feet, up to 5,320 university residence beds and enrolment of up to 15,000 students over 50 years. Michael B. Cline, Purdue’s senior vice president for administrative operations, called the Academic Success Building the first major step in that plan.
The university has cultivated relationships with 55 companies for internship, co-op, research and career opportunities. Those relationships span biosciences, technology, pharmaceuticals and engineering.
The programme list now touches this readership. The hospitality and tourism management major starts at Indianapolis in August 2026. The Master of Science in Athletic Training starts there in fall 2026 with an expected cohort of 25 to 30 students. Construction management technology and multidisciplinary technology join the campus in the 2026-27 year. Purdue reported more than 106,000 students across its locations in October 2025. More than 57,000 study at the West Lafayette and Indianapolis campus locations.
What the site adds to midweek demand
Midweek room demand follows the visit calendar. Admitted-student visits, orientation, move-in, family weekends, commencement and research conferences each put families, faculty and industry partners into hotel rooms on weeknights. Purdue also describes K-12 STEM enrichment through night, weekend and summer residential and nonresidential programmes in the building.
The university keeps adding beds and buildings on the same blocks. Trustees approved the Canal Square Apartments purchase on 10 October 2025. That complex at 359 N. West St. is four storeys on 3.63 acres, carries 400,000 square feet and holds 479 beds in 320 units with a 441-space parking garage. It borders West Street to the west, New York Street to the south and Vermont Street to the north. The university honours the existing leases through the transition, and state approval is required before Purdue takes ownership.
The West Street corridor carries the rest of the purchases. The facility at 518-520 Indiana Ave. opened as the Student Center with a library, a writing lab and student success services. Trustees approved the acquisition of 501 Indiana Ave., 1.5 acres of developable land with a surface parking lot, in October 2025. The Purdue Research Foundation acquired 401 W. Michigan St. in January 2025. Trustees approved the purchase of 420-422 W. Michigan St. and 510 Indiana Ave. on 10 April 2026 for $4 million, a 0.24-acre parcel with a three-storey building from 1846 that most recently held offices.
The hotels within half a mile
Four hotels sit within half a mile of the site. The distances are straight-line measures taken from the OpenStreetMap building node for the Academic Success Building at 39.7748821, -86.1680549 with a local haversine.
Hampton Inn Indianapolis Downtown IUPUI and Homewood Suites by Hilton Indianapolis Downtown IUPUI share the address 414 W. Vermont Street, at 232 m and 234 m. Residence Inn Indianapolis Downtown on the Canal at 350 W. New York Street sits 385 m from the site. Courtyard Indianapolis at the Capitol at 320 N. Senate Avenue sits 489 m away. The Homewood Suites and Residence Inn properties carry the extended-stay positions on that ring.
While the build runs to 2027
Purdue publishes its own travel notices for the site. Indiana Avenue from N. West Street to N. Blackford Street closed from 18 to 23 May 2026 for new water connections to the building. The westbound lanes of W. Michigan Street close from N. West Street to N. Blackford Street from 26 May through 6 June. The university states the road will close again on a schedule still to be set.
Those closures sit inside walking range of the hotels above. Utility and fit-out work continues to the May 2027 completion date.
What to ask Purdue for
Four items would let a revenue manager price this build. The campus visit calendar for admitted-student events and family weekends would date the compression nights. Purdue’s room-block practice for athletic-training and research cohorts would set the midweek baseline. A construction logistics schedule for the months to May 2027 would settle the loading and parking demands on Michigan Street. An enrolment build by year would size the programme-driven traffic.
Purdue publishes none of the four, and the record carries no room-night, rate or pickup figure attached to the Indianapolis expansion. Treat the building as a midweek demand generator with a dated arrival. The beds open in May 2027, the visit calendar starts at the same time, and the hotels within half a mile collect the family and partner nights from that point.
